Rubella Innoculations - Was it for girls only? - Health Questions

Question
I remeber having a rubella jab at school, but I was sure only the girls got it, as german measles can be dangerous to a fetus. But my G/F says that her brother also had the jab at school?
Was it just for the girls???

Best Answer

The girls were the only ones as you say, we were about 13 or so. Maybe he's thinking of the BCG we all had about a year after...
Yes girls only.
Yes it is just for girls, as you rightly say it's because of the damage it can do to the foetus.
Rubella is a very mild infection and a lot of people can have it and not even realise they have, and for a boy (or pre pubescent girl) to get it is no big deal.
In the UK only girls are offered the job, I have never heard of a boy having it, but of course the US has different protocols to us here, so I can't comment on that.
just for girls arent we lucky ;-)
Little boys get a measles/mumps/rubella vaccine because (aside from reducing the risk of getting rubella for the boy) if a little boy gets it and spreads it around where a newly pregnant woman could pick it up it is dangerous for her baby.

Girls and boys get the same immunizations: Measles/Mumps/Rubella, Diptheria/Tetanus/Pertussis, Polio, and these days HIb.
My sons both got the Rubella/mumps/measles jabs in 1991 as a matter of course.
